The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas Et Prævalebit. SATURDAY, JUNE 16, 1888. THE LATE KAISER FREDERICK
The news of the death of the Emperor Frederick must have been anticipated by the messages which we published last evening. The news, however, will be received with much sympathy and great regret. It is only three months ago since his illustrious father died, and all Germany mourned for the old Kaiser with true patriotic mourning. Nor was that grief felt only by the German Empire, but might be said to bo worldwide. His no less illustrious son has for long manfully, patiently and hopefully struggled against the progress of a ootrord . malariv m Kio throat, and to whioh now ho has succumbed. Tne death of so able a Prince and so beloved an Emperor, though his reign as the latter was short, must bo recognised as a calamity iv the present state of European political feeling. Frederick William Victor, his eldest son, will succeed to the title, but his mind is under Die influence of Bismarck who is known to have no end m view, except to involve the country m a war with France. The ne*t move m diplomatic circles will he watched with keen interest and particularly so by England. The Empress being a daughter of our Queen draws the sympathies of the English people to her m a peculiar manner. The whole course of the late Emperor's life has been an oventful one, and the suffering ho has endured within llio last year, has made him an object of universal sympathy. There is no doubt that his death will weaken the peaceful relations which might hare been brought about between the European Powers had he lived a few years longer.
