As to lemon peel, the "drained peel" !■ not obarged so heavy a duty that it ' oannot be imported as cheaply or more so than the local firms can " candy" it. The new duty on glucose is a direct tax on the brewers — being used by them instead of sugar. The export of provisions to those places from which fruit pnlp Is Imported ia expeoted to cease with the importation of the pulp! Tobacoonlsta will evade the tax on tobacco, 6tc, by the manufacture of another clais of cigarettes, of lighter weight, weighing If lbs per thousand, as •galoot 2&lbe per thousand as at present. The effeot of the pew duty on patent medicines is that the grocers will have to raise the price to the rate charged by chemists, or pay the duty themselves. It Ib believed the netr duty will open the door to many fraudulent imitations. The doty on boota and shoes will largely ■top importations of high class boots and ■hoes, as also on imported leathers. It will atop the get up of oheaper kinds of inch boots. The extra duty on wines and spirits is expected to reduce the consumption. It Is alleged that the alteration of the duty on plain galvanised Iron will have the effect of completely crushing the firms m Aqckland and Wellington, which have recently ereoted extensive machinery for Qorrngating iron, The new duty on candles will limit the supply for domestic consumption. The drapery retail trade will not be affected by tho extra import duties, at the consumer will have to pay for all. Soda aeb, which is used m soap making, is not produced m the colony, and the new duty will affeot the soap makers. Tinned fißh imports will be largely curtailed. Twopence per pound on imported starch should develop a local industry. The new regulations provide for a ro> duotion of duty on rice if made into starch m bond. I
