IN accordance with sub-Section 4, Section 804 of " The Counties Aot, 1886," tho Council directs the publication of the Aphburton Traffic Bridge ByLaws, which como into forco on MONDAY, 2nd day of July, 1888. By order, F. AfAIN WARING, Clerk. Ashburton, June 4th, 1888, ASHBURTON TRAFFIC BRIDGE BY-LAWS. BESOLVED.— That m pursuance nnd exercise of tho powers vested m it by "The Counties Act, 1886," and of all other powers enabling it m that behalf the County Council of tho County of Aehburton dr hereby repeal the existing By- Laws made by it for regulating the traffic on the Ashburton Trnffia Bridge, and ia lieu thereof do make the following By-Lawß.:— 1. ALL horbes crossing tho bridge which are not driven iv harness or led by bridlo or halter, aod all oattle, aheap, pigs, goats, mules and donkeys must have a man behind tbena. Cattle and horses m mobs must also have a man m front of them. 2 HORSEMEN or light -wheeled vehicles shall not travel at a greater pace than six miles an hour while crossing the bridgo. 3. TRACTION engines, portable engines, combines, elevators, reapers and binders, (except reapers and binders on their own carriages) and other machines, whether agricultural or otherwißO exceeding cloven teet m breadth shall not be taken over the bridgo except under the following conditions. Tho owner or other person m charge thereof, shall obtain from an officer to be from time to time appointed by the County Council of tho County of Ashburton for tbe|Jpurpose, a pern'it m writing, authorizing .the passage of the traction engine, portable engine, combine, j elovabor, reapar and binder or other machine as tho caaa may be over the bridge. Beforo such engine, combine, elevator, reaper and binder or other machine bogins to cross the bridge, tho owner or other person iv charge thereof shall station a man at the other end of the j bridge wMi v fli.g as a danger signal to ( the drivers of vehic'os which may be , approaching, and tho engine, combine, 1 elevator, reaper and binder or other j tnuchino while m the act of crossing tho bridge shall be accompanied by the officer granting the permit; Tho owner or poraon m charge of any engine shall tako bucli precautions agauißl fire as Bhall satisfy tho 1 oflicor of tho OouDoil ucoompanying Iho 1 aamo. The officer granting any porinit shall bo entitled to churgo a foe for th > same, which feo shall m the case of traction engine* be the sum of ton shillings, and m all otlior oabos tho feo shall bo two shillings and sixpence. 4. NO engine or machine exoeeding twelve tons m weight shall be takun over the Bridge without the special permit m writing of the Engineer for tho time being of the County Council, first had and obtained such special permit to the supple muntary, and m addition to the permit and personal attendance of an officer of the Council required by the last preceding By-Law. 5. EVERY engine while o-csilog the Bridge shall bo moved nt a uniform rate of Bpeed v*hloh Bhall not exceed one mile an honr, 6. TRACTION engines shall only be taken across tho bridge between daylight and dark and during the following hours, that Is to say from daylight until eight o'olook In the morning, from noon until one o'olook iv the afternoon, and (whon the season of tho yoaf permita) from s'x o'olook In the*evenlog until dark. NO greater weight th«n three tons grots on any one pair of wheels with tires less than five inches broad shall be taken over the bridge. 8. NO person shall go upon or cross the Bridge while Id a state of Intoxication. ANY person who shall commit any broioh of either of tbe foregoing By-Laws shall for every such offence be liable to a penalty not exoeeding flve 15) pounds.
