SMALL FARM SETTLEMENT

The Woodvllle-Mangataicoko Small Farm Association have announced their Intention to draw their sections on tbe first day of July. The fixing of the rente of railway and other matters have kept this Association ft good dej»l in the background. Now that the railway route Is fixed and the survey complete, tbe A.ssooialion will prooeed vigorously to improve their sections, and make it a prosperous settlement. Of the quality of the land there is no doubt that too much cannot be said in its favor. It oonxprlßea some of the best in the ooiony, the flats being rioh alluvial and the hilts limestone formation, the highest not more than 200 feet. Already several morcbora are settling on their suburban sections in the township of Scarborough, and tha members have resolved to hold a sale In Wellington of the spare sections. The position of the township is all that could be desired. It la situated on the railway line, the railway station not being more than 8 chains from the centre of the township, and it also stands on tbe proposed main road from Pahlatua to Palmereton. The Umber syndicate have taken in four of the prinoloal totara mills in the bußb, comprising Riohter Nunneetead, (Henderson aud Wratt, Taranakl Timber Company, and another. They are now valuing the stocks of the smaller mills with a view to bring them into the company and thus create a monopoly of the timber trade in Uawke's Bay. Heart of tot*ra has already risen from lla to 14a per 100 feet, and it ia autioipated that a corresponding rise will take place in reapeot of ordinary building timber. There is a totara forest, part of a blook of 80,000 acres, near Ormondvllle, over which Government have a pre-emptive right. It would, however, be a long time before it could be tapped, even If tho negotiation! should be concluded immediately, so that in any oabe the monopoly of this company, so far as totara is concerned, promises to be a long one.—*' Cathollo Times."
