A WAR SCARE.
« (From our own Correspondent.) Wellington, May 23. I bear on excellent authority that the Government today reoeived a cablegram that war is Imminent m Europe, and indicating the course to be adopted m the event of an outbreak of hostilities; Later Daring the afternoon qalte a Boare was felt m the lobbies as to a probable oatbreak of war at an early date m Europe, intimation of which It was stated had been reoeived by oable by Government. The tumor, it appears, arose from some statement of the late officer oommanding the New Zealand forces, Sir George Whlttuore, bat on what he based hiß remarks it ii impossible to say, though the statement was most circumstantially made that a cable had been reoeived. The matter was eventually brought up m the House by Mr O'Oallaghan, and hi reply Mr Fergus seated that Government were not s.ware of any communication, but it is believed that a despatch has been received on the subject by the Governor, informing- him what steps to take m event of sudden hostilities,
