Government should not, c for revenue, mortgage the morals and health of the people." The " Wanganui Chronicle " has the followl ing:— Mr A. Smith, who for years past has been m oharge of the Bullb and Sanson agencies of the Bank of New Zealand, has left D Bulls for Wellington en route for Ashburton, , where he assumes oharge of the bank's a branch. i There is a movement on foot among the 0 Melbourne oompositors to demand Is 2d per 1 thousand for their composition m future. I This is an advance of Id a thousand on the ? present rate, and will mean an addition of r about £3000 per annum to both thd " Argua " j and the " Age " wages aooounts. r> It has been suggested by a Nelson settler a that a satisfactory way of dealing with the Ohinoso difficulty would be to prohibit the | exportation of the bones or bodies of the 7 dead. He claims that no Chinaman will risk r dying m a oountry from which he cannot get rr his bones taken back to his celestial home. t The Ashburton Hunt Club meets for the 1 month of June have been fixed as follows : — „ 1, Monday,4th, Mothvonatnoon; 2, Saturday, 9th, Elgiu Bridge at 12.30 ; 3, Thursday, 14th, * Mr Houston's, Winohmore, at 1 ; 4, Monday, 1 18 th, Mr A. The man that rolls a manus script ought to go to the devil— and will." y No editor, however, objects to mere notes ' being rolled. "A roll of notes" is the 9 favorite form m fact. It is anticipated that the Finanoial State- " ment will be delivered on Tuesday. One of > its most startling features will be the proposed I abolition of the Public Works Department ; and should the Cabinet's proposal m that a respect, and with regard to doing away with * the Native Department be agreed to, there . will be one portfolio vacant, thus reducing % the number of Ministers m the House to fivo. 3 At the E.M. Court this morning, before Mr I B Aloorn, J.P., John Jack was oharged with j drunkenness and with maliciously damaging , property. On the first ohargo he was fined ss, and on the latter he was ordered to pay - the amount of damage 12s 6 i. — Daniel . Fitzgerald, for drunkenness and riotous 3 behaviour m a public plaoe, was fined 10a, with the alternative of 48 houra' imprison--1 men*. ' Bearing m mind the experience of a few yearo ago, when £27,000 was paid as oomi pansation for the closing of two distilleries, 3 as it was found that m oonsequenoe of the [ differential rates the revenue suffered, the i Government will refuse to amend the Distillation Act, or m framing the Tariff to favorably i consider the question of the re-establishment 1 of distilleries m the colony wiih the view of j affording some encouragement to the farming industry. r As shewing the rates of wages ruling m s Ireland we publish the following from an ' exohango :— The Beoond hiring fair for the I Spring half-year was held m Abbey Yard, : Newry, Down, recently. There was a largo - attendance of farm sorvants, and the engagements entered into were pretty numerous at the following rate of wages:— Ploughmen, ' from £6 to £7 10s for the half-year; young I men for general farm work, £4 10s to £5 10s ; ) strong boys, £3 10a to £4 ; and young lads, p £2 to £3 for the half year. Female servauts, capable of discharging all kinds of work m a ' farmhouse, received from £4 to £4 103 for ; the half-year, and young girls, 35s to (JOa for the same period. ;• Writing on the 23rd March, the London f correspondent of the " Arguß " said :— " The ( frozen meat trade is brisker this week, and . prices are a little higher. The improvement is caused partly by the long oontinuanoe of 1 cold weather. The prices ruling are : — New . Zealand, 29 8d to 3a per stone ; Sydney, 23 6d » to 2a 8d ; River Plate, 2s 3d to 2a sd. New Zealand lamb is bringing 3s 8d to 4s 4d, and 1 beef 3a 4d per stone. It is alleged, probably i with considerable truth, that a good deal of , New Zealand and foreign meat is sold as prime , English mutton. Lord Leamington has been ' airing the grievance m the House of Lords, ' and Captain Cotton m the Commons. Replyi ing to the latter, Sir M. Hioks-Beaoh stated that the sale of foreign imported meat as English meat when the latter is demanded is an offence under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, and that therefore no further legislation waß required to prevent the abuse complained of. SANDER and SONS' EUCALYPTI EX-BAOT.—-Cure of Skin Diseases. Inveroargill, N.Z., 3,rd of July, 1880. Messrs Sander and Sons, Sandhurst,- Gentlemen, — Having suffered from eczema {aßkin disease which is very prevalent m this colony) for about nine years, I had consulted numerous medical men bere and m Australia, and had takon arsenic, stryohnine, iodide of potpssium, etc, internally, and had used preparations of zinc and lead externally. Jn fact, J had tried alj the remedies known to the faculty, and what between travelling, dootors', and druggists' bills, had spent a small fortune, almost, if not wholly, without results, exoept to injure my constitution. During a reoont visit to Hokitika I was recommended to try your Extraot of Eucalyptus Globulus by a brother who had experienced great benefit from it m alleviating a very severe cold, and no less to my surprise and satisfaction, I found the disease whioh troubled me so long was conquered, and the skin resumed its normal condition. This was effected by the external use of less than two two-ounce bottles. You are weloome to make any use you please of this letter, and I subscribe myself— Yours, etc (Signed), John H. K.Ean, Manager Union Bank of Australia Limited,--(4dvt.) 5
Looal option polls for the licensing distriots \ of Ihe Borough of Aahburton, Upper Ash- ) burlon, Ashburton (suburban), and Mount Somers have been proceeding to-day. Not muoh interest appeara to attaoh to any of the polls, and m the borough only eighteen votes were recorded up to three o'olook. The third "Ingleside" gathering was held m the Oddfellows' Hall last evening and was well attended. Songs were contributed by Miss Henry, Messrs Pickford, Miller, and others. Mr and Miss Simmons gave a couple of violin duets. Bagpipe musio for the Scotoh dances wore supplied by Messrs Mabin and McQueen, while Mr Kneen acted [ as aocompani3t on the piano. ! The " Tuapeka Times " records that m the firat washing-up of the new Blue Spur Company a half-sovereign was found among the gold, bearing the stamp of the Sydney Mint and the date 1861 — the year m whioh gold was first discovered m Gabriel's Gully. Mr J. O. Brown intends having a hole punched m this long-lost ooin, and wearing it on his watch ohain. Mr Eden George arrived m Ashbur. ton this morning with his photographic plant and a numerous train of assistants, and was engaged all the afternoon making a display of his artistio photography m the Orange Hall to be ready for the oonversazione on Friday night. He haß nearly 400 square feet of exhibits, inoluding a lot intended for the Melbourne Exhibition, whither he has already despatohed a show case weighing a ton and a half. He is also fitting uphis Btudio at Taylor's -gallery, opposite the Boyal hotel, m Moore street, and will at once have all preparations oompleted for doing an extensive business. Tiokots entitling holders to be photographed at reduoed rates oan be obtained from Mr Henry Zander, merchant, East street, till Saturday night, after whioh full price will be oharged. The "Otago Daily Times" reports that there is a growing soaroity of many desoriptiona of fiah which used to be most plentiful m and about Otago harbor. As a familiar instanoe it mentions the flounder, ot whioh the very limited supply is no doubt correctly ascribed to the reokless manner m which the fishing has been conduotbd ; the merest little dabß having been oaught by the bushel, and the waters thus denuded. The praottoal result is that fish for tha table is soaroe, and consequently bo dear as to be, with the ex- ] ception of the coarser varieties, beyond the 1 means of most people, who are thus'debarrod 1 from a most wholesome food. In the face of several conviotions lately under the Fidheries , Conservation Act, it may be presumed that the soarcity of fi3h m Dunedin harbor is due I to the disregard that is paid by most fisherman to the regulations for the oonserva' ion i offish, Hollowa7's Pills and Ointment. Vicissitudes of olimate, exposure and hardt ships, tell heavily on soldiers and Bailors, T Bowing the Beeds of diseases which may ultit mately break up the consiitution. Naturally 3 careless of their health, a word m season » may avert many evilß, and may oauaa them i to resort to timely measures without any difficulty or publicity. Hollo way 'a effeotual . remedies are so suitable, and so easily adapted , for the various complaints to whioh our solt diers and sailors are liable, that a supply l should always be obtained before proceeding abroad. It may with confidence be stated j that many a valuable life might have been saved, or confirmed cripple prevented from begging m the streets, if Hollo way's remedies ) had been used m time.
