Tpeb press association. ] ' Auckland, May 14 A meeting of mining dtreotors and others interested m the mining industry W33 held today at the Chamber of Commerce to contider the queation of stoppage o£ the Thames big pump. Mr J. M. Lennox presided, .After a lo:;g dlscnasion it was resolved that the Tha nes Drainage Board be authorised to make a levy on the varloos gold mining companies to raiae money to purchase the bfg pump, ar.d that the Kvy.be on the bass of the gold yield. Delegates from the various companies were appoin v ed to confer with ' the Drainage Board on the sufcj ot. The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Chn'roher, two of the oldest settlers In the Auckland district was celebrated to-day. There are forty grand children and one great grand child of the old couple. Napieb, May 14. The whole of tfie " Hawke's Bay Herald " establishment is now lighted by the electric light. The peculiarity of the installation la that the light is supplied from accumulators which are charged m ordinary day working hoars by the gas engines that are used to drive the printing machinery. The light given off 1b abaolutely steady and beautifully brilliant, yet soft. The storage system overcomes the old objection to the gas engines as generators of electricity for lighting, as irregularity id oharging does not matter. | The first cost is greater but there 1b greater economy m working, es a epeolai attendant at night is dispensed with, and, to a large extent, power now wasted m the day time can be utilised, Messrs Ash croft and 00., of Wellington, have pat m the installation. Mr Robert Dobsdn has received the following cable message from Tyser and Co., dated London, May 12th :— "The Selembria arrived at St. Vincent on Wednesday, and sailed again for London. Dunedin, May 14, At a speoUl meeting of the City Council it was announced that of £17,472, the amount of the oity rates, all had been collected save £14, a result which agreeably surprised Councillors. Inveroargixl May 14. At a public meeting to night it was decided to accept the offer of the New Zealand Fire Brigade Association to hold the next demonstration m Inveroargill. Committees wtre appointed to arrange preliminaries. A meeting m furtherance ot the objeot will be held at Gore. The town, waterworks will be finished by the date of the demonstration. The weather iv this district has been remarkably fine for several weeks past, and now that harvest operation 1 ] are concluded it is found that the quantity and condition of the yield have not suffered by previous bad weather to nearly the extent supposed. Grain buyers speak well of the quality of the crops. Immense qaantiths of grain are coming forward for shipment, and the railways are taxed to keep abreast of the traffic, while the 1 Union Company's steamers cannot give the cargo space required. There is a perceptible movement of the Finance Companies to pirt with large estates la the diatrlot that have fallen into their hands at a considerable reduction on the rates ruling a few years ago. Enquiries for land are becoming more frequent, some being from Victorian farmers.
