ASHBURTON VOLUNTEER.
THE BDITO Sik,~" Truth" m hla firat sentence maintains the report waa oorrect. In hla second paragraph he tells us it waa after the company movements of tbo Rifle? that the Major expressed himself " highly pleased,' etc., and that he was muoh mare complimentary than would be inferred from the report, and m the third part of hia letter he says the report was fair. It would be instructive and interesting to hear " Truth " explain how a report oan be "accurate," "not complimentary enough," and at the same time " fair." Had the author of tbe report inserted after the word offiaera '* Major Newall expressed himself highly pleased with the company movements of the Rifles, and notloed a marked Improvement m the manual exercise of the Guards " his report would have been a true one, and no one oonld take any exoeptlon to it ; but, putting it as he did, the inference to be drawn waa that at the conclusion of the pirade the Major, m making his final remarks, made nse of the words to whichl objected. The word "drill," as he used It, oould only be nnderatood to mean the whole of the work done, and I repeat that In that aense Major Newall made no allusion to either one company or the other, but as before stated expressed himself highly pleased and particularly notloed that every one present did hia work with great spirit. I am, eto., Jambs Keib,
