PARLIAMENTARY NOTES.

Major Steward this afternoon gave notice to move further amendments to thoae proposed by the Government when the House. oonsldera the suggested alterations of the Standing Orders, whioh he informs me ha will do as follows :— (1; To discontinue the praotloe of reading, by the Speaker, of the Governor's speech at the first sitting of the House and to substitute the practice of laying the oama on the table. (2) To enable Bills not completed before the prorogation to be proceeded with at next following session of Parliament. The latter practice ia adopted m America. Mr George Hatchlson f ßJ"Employment of Females Bill," which will be introduced by him, is to extend the provisions of the original Aot whioh limits the hours of labor of females employed m retail places of business within boroughs, but says that the hours may ext9nd from any hoor In the forenoon till any hour m the afternoon provided that time of suoh employment shall not exceed eight hours m any one day. Mr Goldie is moving for a return showing the number of Police Inspectors m the service of the oolony on Ist November, 1887) suoh return to include the name, age, length of service, including provincial service and salary paid to eaoh, with name of district In whioh saoh Inspector was then located. The first note of warning In reference to the campaign against the totallaator, which will be waged daring the Beiolon, wrb given to-day by Mr Beetham, who gave notice of a resolution to the effect that m the opinion of the House it ia desirable that a portion of the money received as percentage on the working of the totalisator should be appropriated to the purpose of hospitals and charitable aid. Mr Mltohelson will shortly, I understand, bring m a Bill to deal with the whole subjeat, but it is not thoroughly drafted. Mr Billanoe is expeoted to arrive on Monday next. Notloe of the naval sessional committees was given to-day. ' Mr Hutchison is desirous to have a committee appointed to enquire into the position of the defences of the oolony. Mr W. P. Beeves is enquiring of Government If they will make arrangements with the Union Company to bring members to Wellington m time for the opening of Parliament. The Government have promised to Mr Levestam to provide work for the unemployed of Nelson on the same terms as m other large towns, but the work must be outside town. Mr Fergus introduced a Bill to-day to deal with the Old Soldiers and Volunteers' land claims. Mv Vincont P/ke was m great form In moving the Addreßs- In- Reply. Mr Taylor ia moving for the introduction of all correspondence m regard to the mall contract between Springfield and the West Coast, Mr Richardson has given notloe to In* troduce a Mining Aot Amendment Bill, and Mr Fisher Auckland Girls High School Bill and Codlin Moth Bill.
