THE GRAND OLD MAN.
The non-conforming clergymen have forwarded an address to Mr Gladstone, m which they expressed sympathy with him and confidence , m the policy he was following. They condemned the policy of the Government m treating political offenders as felons, and expressed a hope that the legitimate national aspirations of the Irish people will be achieved. Mr Gladstone, m reply, thanked them for their kind words of sympathy, and said that the members of the Opposition Party had given the Government every assistance m expediting the business of the session. The affairs m Ireland were matters of great moment, and demanded settlement, and he was prepared at the right time to take action, insisting that they should receive attention. He hoped that popular opinion would soon demand a change m the administration of Ireland.
