The " Wanganui Herald " (Mr Balance's paper) prediots that increased taxation will be the principal feature of the next financial statement. Adelaide people are possessed of the conviction which will never bo shaken that Adelaide beyond question is the prettiest city m the whole of Australia. The " Bell," discussing the question of the leadership of the Opposition, states that a politician m Auckland, who professes to know the counsels of the party, says Mr Downie Stewart is the coming man, and that the seleotion is pretty well cut and dried. Rider plaggard is desoribed as a Blightly built, wiry-looking blonde, with a pale complexion and light-blue eyes. He is said to be very muoh of a lion m London society, where, with a vague manner of well-bred ennui, he listens to the fulsome allusions to his books. In the Rangitikei distriot the best cropping results of wheat were 40 and 42 bushels per acre for 45 acres, On portion of the Westmere estate, Wanganui, Messrs Ritchie and Wilson raised 65 to 67 bushels from a crop of 110 acres, and an average of {over 70 bushels was obtained from Hearn and Kennedy's. | A naphtha reservoir is to be constructed m the harbor at 0, dessa at a cost of 2,500,000 roubles. The " Inverness Courier " says : — The iinanoial position of Prince Victor Dhuleep Singh, who has lately been gazetted from Sandhurst to a commission m a cavalry regiment, is engaging the attention of the India Offloe. Thousands of rabbits are killed off m a few day's hunt. The leoture to be given to-night m the Presbyterian Church by the Rev Charles Murray, M.A., the missionary from the New Hebrides, will consist of interesting and valuable information regarding the group of islands and their inhabitants, and, considering the large amount of interest attaching to these Pacific groups at the present time, all those able to attend Bhould not miss this opportunity. Mr Pierce Weldon, of Greenstreet, met with an accident last evening by whioh he broke his arm. He was driving home from town, and when near his house a friend brought out a lantern to show the way, as the night was very foggy. The light frightened the horse, whioh ran into the fence, capsizing the trap, part of which fell on Mr Weldon's arm, fracturing the limb. Dr Tweed was. oalled m, and the suffere runder bis oare is progressing favorably. The Central Queensland Meat Preserving Company have made a contraot for the delivery m London during two years of 300 tons frozen hind quarters of beef, the supply beginning m September, the meat to be transhipped m Koppele Bay into steamers of the Colonial Union Company now traning to New Zealand. The Inspection parado last evening, was well attended, the Rifles under Captain Dolman, mustering 46 of all ranks, and the Guards under Captain Sparrow, 34, and Major Douglas being m the command of the whole. The companies were exercised for some time by their own officers, after whioh Captain and Adjutant Fooks took them for Battalion drill, and Major Douglas put them through fcu-dejoio, eto. Major Newall, the inspecting offioer, was highly pleased with the drill of the Rifles, and he also noticed a marked improvement m that of the Guards, After some very complimentary remarks, Major Newall referred briefly to the proposed parade of the South Canterbury Battalion at Ashburton on the Queen's birthday, nnd expressed his regret that it had been found impossible to arrange an encampment for last Easter.
