ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary monthly meeting tfaa held last evening. Present— Measra Sawlo (Ohairman), Oook, Oralghoad, Elstcn, Scott, Duncan and Kingston, FINANOtAIi. The Ohairman Baid that the credit balance at the bank was £34 12s Ad, , CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read (1) From Board, of Ednoation on routine snbjeots, and In regard to the new regulations as to salaries, also In reference to the arrange* meat of staff Bhould a eecoud master be appointed, Shcald such master be ap. pointed, one of the lady teachers' salary after the end of the present year would be reduced, and another lady teacher would have to bs removed. The Board aßked for a recommendation on this latter subject. — The Chairman was averse to interfering with the atafi, bat It was for the Committee to say. — Me Duncan was quite with the Chairman as to ohanging the staff, but the master stated that another male teacher was desirable.— After discussion further consideration was deferred till next m?e'ing. (2) From Dr Tweed enclosing account for professional services rendered to a pupil who met with an accident at the Bohool treat some two years ago. — The Ohairman, and Messrs Duucan and Elston, explained the position <f affsi.s, from which it appeared the Committee as such could not pay the amount. — Mr Elston said that he had 15] m baud whioh had been subscribed, and he thought the mombers personally should subscribe the requisite amount. — It wu decided that the Committee oould not pay the amount, but Messrs Danoan and Elston undertook to endeavor to get it subscribed. master's REBort. The master's report was read. The number on the roll was '- — Boys, 193 j girls, 198 ; Total, 391. Average attendance : Boys, 155 6 ; girls, 153 8 ; total, 309.4. He forwarded a list of children who did not attend regularly, Mr Oaaighead thought the compulsory olause should be put m foroe. The Chairman undertook to see some of the parents. If that bad no effeot then the question of putting the compulsory clause m force could be con* sidered. It was decided to apply for certain echool furniture^ recommended by the" Head Master. tIDE SCHOOL. Mr Cook ihonght the Committee should again urge on the Board the necessity for a side school at Allenton. The population m that district was increasing, and the bad weather now coming on would prevent many ohildren, living m that locality, coming to the Borough school* He moved m that direction. Mr Craighead seconded. The Chairman considered the Com* mittee had not been at all' fairly dealt with m this matter. Mr Daucan agreed with the previous speakers, and tboaght a full statement of the case Bhould be laid before the Board, and he moved as an amendment that a Committee oonslatlng of the Chairman, Messrs Oraighead and Cook be appointed to draw np a letter, to be brought before the Committee at next meeting. Mr Elston Beoonded the amendment whioh was carried. APPLICATIONS. Applications for th.3 posts of Saoretary and Caretaker were considered. The application o' Mrs Barna for the office of ciretaker at £16 per annum and free cottage, and that of Mr G. F. Petrle for that of Secretary at £4 per annum were accepted, fueo. The tender of Mr R. S. Bean foe the Bupply of fuel was accepted. RETRENCHMENT. Mr Oook sa.id that as the Oommittea had been retrenching the Clerk and 0 iretaker, it was only right that they should apply tho pruning knife all rouad. He thought some saving might be effaoted m the soavangering, Mr Duno»n said that the Committee could not interfere m this matter without making arrangoraant with the soavengew. Ultimately a Committee was appointed to ace if the scavengers would consent to reduce their oharges. '|;ha Ojmtnltcee then adjourned. J
