The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. TUESDAY, MAY 8, 1888. NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.
The second annual report of the Executive of the New Zealand Alliance, adopted in March last, shows that the work of carrying out the objects of the Alliance is being vigorously proceeded with. Sir William Fox has been head and front in having the principles of the Alliance spread throughout the'colony and Mr T, W. Glover as organising agent has performed a good deal of up hill work, in carrying on the temperance work. 135 auxiliarios have been established in different towns in the oolony and generally, the report says, these branches are doing good service Prohibition, the report alleges, is being fostered very warmly and ere long will be a power in the hands of the Temperance party. The number of subscribers of the Alliance is 3100, or double the number of the previous year. The income for the twelve months was £715 19s 9d, and the expenditure #712 2s lOd, On the question of the distribution of literature favoring the Alliance, the report says : — " A really trenchant handling of the pros and cons of the question of compensation in pamphlet or leaflet form, is needed, as too much importance cannot be attached to the urgency of giving a right bent to the public mind on this coming question, before people havo been indoctrinated with those gpecious but deceptive arguments which the friends of the traffic are now so industriously engaged in disseminating. During the neyt year no portion of the Alliance funds can be better spent than in calling the printing press to our aid. In this connection, the Executive would also further suggest that a more liberal use of the daily press, by our numerous qualified friends in furtherance of our principles, would materially assist." With regard to prohibition tho report goes on to say " that a correct solution of the prohibition" problem contains within it potentialities of great importanco to tho future of this colony. It embraces the elevation of the rising generation, upon whoso education so much public money is now being spent, the freeing of our local industries from tho drawback which want of native capital implies, and the utilisation to tha best advantage of tho revenue raised from the Colonist by severing from it tho non-productive expenditure, which the maintenance of drink-caused pauperism, crime, and national immorality entails." The Alliance claims that in Victoria a great triumph has been obtained in tho Temperance question and claims for this colony the sympathy of the churches. They point to thefftejb fchat there is a steady decrease in the consumption of liquour per head of the population, and look forward to the approaching session of Parliament as a favorable opportunity for testing how far Government is prepared to consider the question. The report is full of interesting statistics which are put forward to prove the good work of the movement, and though there are many points overlooked in a well directed zeal for the welfare of tho colonists, tho expressions and opinions embodied in tho report are worthy of consideration. We do not go tho length of endorsing all that is said, but those interested in the matter will find in the report ample material for many an address on the Temperance question. Tho licensed victuallers and their party, and the temperate among our colonists will hold other views, and these are in some respects open to be calmly considered and discussed apart from any undue feeling on the subject of the liqueur traffic.
