THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
(PBE PKESS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney.' May 5. The sculling race between Hanlan and Kemp fur the Championship of the World and £500 aside waa rowed on the Parramatta this afternoon. There was very little wagering on the race, 22 to 2 (sic) was freely offered on Komp, bat Etonian's admirers were loth to back at the price. A commission of £6000 from Victoria was invested on Harilan. A.n Immense crowd occupied all points of vantage along the river. The woather waa fine, bat, owing to a eouth-weat breeza the water viaa rather lumpy, bat the breeza favored the oar amen. Both Kemp and Hani an were loudly cheered as they eoulled out to the startingpoint. The men got away together aa the word was glren, but la the first few lengths Kemp got a lead of half a length. Hanlan, however, soon got on level terms with him, aad both settled down to a desperate race. At this time Hanlan was pnHiDg thirty-seven strokea to the minute, while Kemp, If anything, was a trifle faßter. Up to Patney the race was a most interesting one, first one and then the other having a Blight advantage ; bat here a foul occurred between them, and Hanlan having the advantage of It, shot ahead and rapidly placed four lengths between himself and the Australian. At this point the race looked a moral for the Canadian, but Kemp made a most deter, mined effort to retrieve the lost ground, and it was not long before only a half length asperated the two boats. Hanlan spurted time after time after time, and endeavored to wear Kemp down, but the champion held hia own. and notwithstanding that he lost quite a length owing to bad steering, was soon on level terms with Hftnlcm. The latter now showed signs of distress, and up to this time the race had been the most interesting race ever rowed on the Parramatta. The excitement was intense, and as the boats approached O'adevllle Hanlan attempted to close on Kemp, bat the latter was too far ahead, Passing the boat sheds H *nJan. was hopelessly m the rear, and Kemp apparently without effort, scnlled away from him, and won very easily by » leDgth. Hanlan et tared a protest against Kemp, on the grouiid of having been foaled, bat (subsequently he withdrew it. (Received May 7, 12.56 p.m.) Sydney, May 7 Han?a n , In the course of aa interview with |a newspaper reporter, declared he would never row anotherraoe beyond thoße for which fixturea wore already made. He also expressed the opinion that Toemer wonld beat Kemp easily. Hanlan returns to Canada to settle there permanently.
