The Government are not clear as to the legality of their action m refusing to accept the poll tax offered by the Chinese, but at the same time are still determined to prevent them landing. At the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church a motion was tabled expressing sympathy with Chinese possessing naturalisation papers not being allowed to land, also for those from whom Government refuse to accept a tax. The assembly characterised the action of Government as illegal. (Received May 3, 1 45 p.m.) THE MARKETS. London, May 2. New Zealand 4 per cents, 15s.
