At a late festive gathering the following toast was given : " Tbe Press, the Pulpit, the Pettieoa's, the three ruling powers of the day. The first spreads knowledge, the second spreads morals, and the third spreads considerably. " Sir jilted Lawßon, speaking at Edinburgh the fljyier day, said that m Ireland at the prefioit time the way to get into the House of Commons was to get into prison ; and the way to get into the House of Lords was to get into a brewery, It is Btated (says the " Marlborough Daily Times") that the Hon. W. Clifford has purchased the Marlborough Meat Preserving Company's Works, with the immediate view of prosecuting (he rabbit-preserving industry, i whioh, Mr Clifford thinks is capable of great extension. The local option poll for Heathoote, the only Ohristohuroh district m whioh there was a fight between the temperance party and the advooates of an increase of licenses took place on Friday, but the result was not made known till the next day. The numbers were 81 for an increase, 139 against. The Master of the Aqhburton Home wishes to acknowledge, with thanks, the reoeipt of fruit and vegetables from St. Stephen's Ohuroh, per Bey E. A. The " Dairyman " says that the use of brine among butter is muoh more popular than it used to be. It is now used by many m washing butter, and some salt their butter only by brining it. If brine is used m washing and fresh water is not subsequently used, brine salting will make the butter as salt as it ought to be, or aa most people like it; The Ohristohuroh police have ferreted out what appears to be an organised gang of thieves. Deteotivea T. Neill and O'Connor have arrested thne young men, Gilbert and Walter French and Gosling, on a charge of stealing several articles, and a man named Connor and Mrs French for receiving. A large and miscellaneous collection of articles waa found m possession of the woman. Levi Kohl, the 12-year-old son of a farmer of Elk township, Perm., m going home from Sunday Sohool reoently, passed through a piece of woods said to be haunted by the ghoßt of a man who was murdered there years ago. Three boys, his playmates, for a joke hid there and groaned, and, when the boy ran, ohased him, yelling. When young Kohl got home he went into convulsions and died m great agony m a few days. A Vienna correspondent telegraphs :— A bankrupt appeared here m court who, m the oourße of the proceedings, declared that his baokbone ran fromjbis chin downwards, and that his chest was situated where other people generally have their backs. The deaths m the Wesleyan ministry m Great Britain for the past year number thirty-eight, which is larger than haa been the case for some years past. Together the asjes give a total of 2660 years, or an everage of three soore years and ten to eaoh deceased minister. The longevity i 3 surprising considering the wear and tear of the itinerancy, and especially the heavy and increasing demands made upon ministers m large towns. At an inquest m a country district m Auokland the other day the following story camo to light The wife, some four score years of age, had diod suddenly, and the inquest brought out these faots :— That eight years before the old dame had died she had consented to her husband going through the form of marriage with another woman, and that the two wives had lived m harmony m the same house ever afterwards. The husband ahd'Tvlfe No. 2 had nuraed wife No. 1 m her last illness, and appear to have been kind to her. Burglars seldom receive more than 20 per cent, of the value of their booty from the buyers to whom they dispose of it, if it happens to be m any other form than coin. A ten-pound bank of England note will bring but two pounds from a buyer, while £100 worth of plate would be worth £15 to £20 to the thief who would risk years of liberty m obtaining it ; and so on of all other valuables. If the stories told by oriminals oan be credited, many men of apparently stainless oharaoter m the commercial world owe most of their wealth to direot dealings with professional thieves. The other replied, "Yes, I know, but I don't think he's got anything m his tin (? till)." To this the first made answer : "Oh yes he has. I saw him put a pound m to-day."
