The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 1888. TIN AT LAST.
Notwithstanding the unfavorable report from the Inspector of Mines — Mr Gordon — published by us on Saturday last, we are glad to be able to give, on the authority of the same gentleman, definite and satisfactory news of the actual discovery of tin-bearing stone m the Mount Somors district. By the courtesy of Mr E. G. Wright wo are . informed that that gentleman, who has y for some time had two men at work above Taylor's stream, took Mr Gordou on the occasion of his recent visit to the scene of operations, where a tunnel has been driven through a stratum of kaolin to what was believed to be tin-bearing stone. Mr Gordon himself took a sample of the reef and carried it with him to Wellington where it has been subjected to the necessary tests, with what results will bo seen from the following telegram received yesterday by the County engiueer : — April 26. TO W. BAXTER ESQ , County Eugineei, Aabbarton. Stone from proepectora above Taylor'a creek contains ornnll per contago of tin. Please Bend mo another plcoo. H. A, Gordon, Inspector, It has thus been settled beyond all doubt that tin exists at the locality named. Whether it will pay to work remains to be proved, but inasmuch as it has been shown that the metal is there— the scientists notwithstanding — there is room to hope that its existence m payable quantity will also bo satisfactorily demonstrated.
