April 26, Resolutions have been passed by the Chamber of Commerce and Royal Geographical Society asking that the Imperial Government should accord Mr Bevan some tangible recognition of the advantages accruing to science and commerce from his important explorations of New Guinea. The annual stock returns for the colony, as prepared by the RegistrarGeneral, show as follows: — 390,000 horses, 1,500,000 head of cattle, 34,700,000 sheep. The wool clip for the year reached 191,500,0001 b. At Mururundi a man named Williams was run over by the train, and the body was mutilated to such an extent as to be beyond recognition. Cardinal Moran, who is about to visit Rome, has been presented with a purse containing 550 soys. The recent dispute which took place m the Legislative Assembly between Messrs Hayes and Fletcher, has resulted m the former taking proceedings against Mr Fletcher for assault. Damages have been fixed at ,£SOOO. The defendant has acknowledged the offence, and has paid £5 into Court, which he alleges is the full amount for which he is indebted.
