A petition is m course of signature praying his Worship tho Mayor to convene a public meeting of inhabitants of the city and suburbs, for the purpose of considering the question of petitioning Parliament to abolish the property lax. BIiENHEIAf, April 26.William Ramsay, la'e lessee of the PI conix Brewery, which was burnt down two months ago, charged with altering figures m a receipt givon him by Pickering and Co., was sentenced today by Mr Justice Richmond to twelve months' hard labor m the Torraoo Gaol, Wellington. Ronowitz, a farmer living near Blenheim, who was charged with stabbing Jeremiah Twohy, who had worked for him as a harvester, m a quarrel arising out of wages, was found not guilty. These are the only criminal cases this session. Oamaru, April 26. The local option vote m Oamaru and Kakanui was against an increase of licenses. Dunedin April 26. A middle aged woman, named Elizabeth Deans, was committed for trial to-day for forging an order on tho Postoffico Savings Bank for £2 53. It appearod she went to a friend named Mrs Moir some months ago to borrow 30s. Mrs Moir gave her her Savings Bank book, as she was ill, to draw the money out of tho Bank. This waß paid back and the book roturned, but on the day when accusod visited Mrs Moir recently, tho Bank book was miseing. She gave notioo to the office and w«3 yesterday sent for, when accusod had made application aB her sister to draw out some money. Mrs Moir admitted that she would have given tho money if asked for it, and accused might have thought she had liberty to do what Bhe did. The agent of tho Colonial Union Company's Worcester to-day notified the Board that the steamer would bo brought vfp the channel to Dunerf in on her arrival if no extra expense was incurred.
