ASHBURTON.

The annual householders' meeting f or che Ashburlon district waa held at tho" Borough school last evening. There was a fair attendance. Mr J. 0. Danoaa wae voted to the chair. The out-going Commit tae'o report waß read as follows, and adopted :— Iv presenting yon with oar anmial report, we hava much pleasure m meeting the householders, inasmuoh as the examinations m connection m connection •with tbe Bchool during, the last year have been the most satisfactory for yeirs pait. —The lospeotorß held their annual examination on the 19th 20th and 21at September last, being one rrionth earlier than usual, m order to work the town examinations into the winter months and give the country aohools the benefit of the bummer time, ao as to ensure a better attendance at the latter schools. The favorable reports given by the Inspectors, on both the progress and annual examinations, reflaot the greatest oredit on the teaching staff for having again placed our school on a satisfactory baste. —We notice with pleasure that under the new soale of staff and salaries, lately compiled by the Bo»rd of Eduoation, yoar Committee oan, when opportunity offarß now supply a long felt want m obtaining a second master for the eohool. —We regret to report to you that the Board has seen fit (although no doubt compelled thereto by the retrenchment of the Government) to reduce the Committee's incidental allowance some £25 per annum, which will tax the Incoming Committee's economy to the utmost, as all repairs have to be paid oat of that fund.—The average attendance for the past year has been, boys, 148 3f; girls, 147*19 ; total, 295 5; out of an average on the roll of boys, 192 34; girle, 20,4 61; total, 396 95. The percentage of attendanoeto number on rell is figuratively about the same as last year, but ea each percentage has thfa year been calculated on the " atriot average " system, and that of last year on the ' working" average, the percentage this year is about 20 better than that of its predecessor, which increase may ba attributed to the granting of good attendance certificates, referred to m the previous Committee's report —The children's annual treat wbb held as usual, but we regret only on a limited soale due to the lack of interest displayed by the parentß not rolling up belter than they did to the children's concert to provide funds, and it is to be hoped that the Idcoming Committee will receive more sapport from them at a oonoert to be shortly given by the children m aid of the prfze fund. —Notwithstanding our repeated efforts to obtain for Allenton a Side School, the Centra) Board, although evidently agreeing with us m the necessity for SJoh a school, has had no funds at its diapoßal for such a purpose. —Subj lined we submit to you a statement of receipts and expenditure for the year. A statement of receipts and expenditure was then read. The election of a new Committee waa proceeded with and resulted asjollowa : - J.W. Sawle 55 J. 0. Duuoan ... ... 50 R Klston 24 A. Cook 19 W, Oraighead 18 Gideon Soott 17 W. T. Kingston 15 J. B. Steele. ... 9 The first-named seven gentlemen were declared.duly elected. A meeting of the newly-elected Committee was held immediately after the householders' meeting, when Mr Saftrle waa elected Chairman, Mr Duncan declining to stand. Some dißOuasion took place m regard to the appointment of BBcretary and caretaker, it being pointed out that the Committee s incidental fund hid been cut down £25 from the amount paid the previous year, and the'Oomroittee had furthermore to pay the ooat of all repaira ont of the fund.
