During a debate m the United States House of Representatives on a Bill for increasing the number of hospitals, one of the Western members rose and observed:—" Mr Speaker, my opinion is, that the ginerality of mankind m gineral are disposed to take the disadvantage of the ginerality of mankind m gineral." •' Sic down," whispered David Crockett, who sat near him, •• you are ooming out of the same hole you went m at."
The ladies of the Sewing Bee of St Andrew's Church, Tinwald met at the residence of Mrs Clark on Wednesday, when the Rev R. F. Garbet, on their behalf, presented Mrs Tippet with a handsome tea service, a3 a slight tribute of the Bee's appreciation of her services m having opened her house during the last 3 years for its weekly meetings. Tho servioe was chosen by Mrs Scott of Tinwald and was muoh admired. Mrs Tippet, m accepting the presentation, made a suitable acknowledgement.
The Australian telegrams on Wednesday announced that Bishop Kennion (R. 0.), of South Australia, had received a legaov of £10,000. The letters RG. are a mistake, the P.ight Rev George Wyndhom Kennion having been consecrated by. the Archbishop of York m 1882, and therefore being Bishop of the Church of England. As a matter of faot there is. no Roman Catholics Bishop of Adelaide, the Most Rev. 0. A. Reynolds having recently been promoted to be an Archbishop. — "Lyttelton Times."
A San Eemo correspondent writing to Mr Labouohere, on Maroh Ist, says .— " The Crown Prince is greatly worried about his private affftirs, and I am sorry to havo to confirm the unfavorable reports as to Prince William which have recently been current. He has practically refused to facilitate arrangements which his father is desirous of currying out (to appreciate the importance of his attitude it is necessary to understand that the Emperor William is now m a state of senile dementia), and he has behaved with a perfectly barbarous rudeness to his mother. If he is ooming here, as people say, it is not by his parents' invitation."
The discovery has recently been made m New South Wales that snakes. when alarmed will swallow their young. Mr McOooey startled a largo black snake with eighteen young ones. 3he opened widely her mouth and the young ones glided m with extraordinary rapidity and disappeared down her throat. McCooey then killed the snake and on dissecting her killed thirteen 'of the youngsters, but the rest got away id the grass. Mr McCooey's discovery sets at rest a question which has always been regarded by scientific, men with soeptioism, viz,, whether or not 3nakes swallow their young m order to proteot them.
A very fine nugget of gold from tho Mount Brown diggings— the largest ever found on that goldfield — has been received at the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, and forwarded to the Mines Department m order that a model of it may be taken for (he geological collection there. The nugget is of long, irregular, oval shape, with nugular cavities showing tho impress of the rock from which it was tukeD. Inform it is exceedingly pretly, and the gold itself is of the finest quality. Tho nugget weighs 28oz 17dwt, and its value ia estimated at £i 3g per ounce. It was sent to tho Mint by Mr phambera, who is largely interested m the mining ventures on the Mount Brown field.
The Paris correspondent of tho " Sydney Morning Herald " Bays :— " Rumours from Athena report Prince Qeorge Edward of Wales to be deeply m love with his eopsin, Prinoess Alexandra, just 17, and the most beautiful young woman m Greece. The princess is belioved to bo equally m love with Prince George, and a wedding ia anticipated to take place m due course of time. It ia also reported that the Pnnoes3 Victoria of Wales is affianced to the Duke of Sparta, Grown Prinoe of Greece, whoso Queen she will be when the Prinoe'B occupancy of the Greek throne occurs. Rumour adds that the eldest daughter of the Prince of Wales ia about to be married, but the personality of her husband-to-be is not clearly knpwn to out-siders."
