THE RAILWAY REVENUE.
The revenue from the New Zealand railway*) for the forty-eight weeks ended on March 3rd waa £911,074, aa against £906,803 for the corresponding period of last year- There was an increase of £4266, 69£ per cent, or £633,449 went m working expenses ; the figures for the corresponding period last year having been 71 per cent, or £644,197. The decrease In the expenditure waa therefore £10,748, although 97 more miles of railway were worked. Daring the forty-eight weeks the number of pasßengera carried was 3,174 063, or 286,067 more than m the corresponding period last year. Under headings we find that 53,670 more parcels, 979 more horBQB, 101,852 more sheep and other live stock, 9296 tons more wool, 56.150 tonß more grain, 46,034 tons more merchandise, and 40,472 tons more minerals were carried than during the corresponding period of the previous year. The approximate cost of construction of all lines to 31st Maroh, 1887, including expenditure on harbour works forming part of therallway system wts (gross cost of opened and unopened lines) £14,219116.
