We found that at the mouth of the race whioh is a diversion of the oreek, tna removal of a bar of shingle would allervate part of the inoonvenienae oomplained of, The mill proprietor, Mr Thomas, was , willing to reduce this m order to maintain as nearly as possible the level of the old creek, which has since been done. It seems to us that the bringing of a large quantity of water at the intake of the Wakanul Creek at the North branch of the river Ashburton fully charges the carrying oapaolty of the creek, and of course m times of heavy rains, it is not capable of taking any storm water that naturally falls intojit, this aocounts principally for the backing of the water on to this road.
