A SELL FOR THE GRAND DUKE
We find the following m the " New Zealand Herald " :— lt is not often that a Russian gets euchred, but the Grand tDnke caught a Tartar at Rotorua, and never got over the adventure till he left, our shores. Aocording to the story, a lady In that Interesting township is a Bealous advocate of the bailors' Best, cr the Boys' Best, I forget which. She got £1 out of the Governor while he was In the Lake country, and the like Bgure ont of the Admiral, and therefore wont for the Grand Duke without any ceremoty. He got rather mixed up betweeu dollars and pounds, and put down the figure "8" In the subscription list, with the sign "£ " before it. He was " touched " next morning for £8, and although he had no earthly intention of giving that amount, after inquiring from some of his entourage what it ail meant, he wbb informed that he bad given himself away to the tune of £8. His pride would not allow him to alter the sum, and he " parted ;'' but If the lady had heard the emphatic language — very emphatic— which His Imperial Highness used with regard to herself and the transaction, Bhe would have given the above institutions a rest for acme time to ooma.
