RUMORED RETIREMENT.

Berlin, April 5. Persistent reports are being circulated to the effect that Prince Bismarck, fearing that Russia may take umbrage at the projected betrothal of Prince Alexander of Battenberg to the Princess Victoria, daughter of the Emperor, has tendered his resignation as Chancellor of the Empire. Another statement is to the effect that Prince Bismarck merely contemplates resigning m consequence of continued ill-health. Both statements are guardedly denied.
Queen Victoria favors the marriage, and it is understood that her contemplated visit to the Emperor is iv accordance with her expressed desire to be present at the betrothal ceremonies.
