New Plymouth, April 6; . A cottage m Powderham street, near Government Buildings, waa burnt at midnight. It was not Insured. It is supposed to have been caused by the ignition of the wood ooaneoted Kith the iron chimney. Sudden Death. The wife of Mr Downoe, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, diedauddenly of apoplexy la3t evening. The Opera House Fire. Wellington, April 6. At the inquiry held today, into the burning of the Opera Boose, a cumber of witnesses were examined but nothing particular was brought out. The jury returned an open verdiot. Union Bank of Australia. Blenheim, April 6. A branoh of the Union Bank of Australia was opened to-day by Mr H. L. Britain, assistant Inspector. The br»noh, will be under the charge of Mr Laishley who managed a branch at Hawera, and was some years previously manager of the Union Bank, Hamilton, Walkato. Supreme Court. Dunbdin, April 6. At the Supreme Court, Jno. Chapman, breaking into a shop, was sentenced to 12 months ; Joseph Kennedy, one month ; Norman T Power, same offence, placed on probation for W months, and each ordered to pay £5 towatfo expenses of prosecution ; Peter Jamleaon, convioted of arson at Bendigo, near Oromwell, sentence deferred.
