THE FROZEN MEAT EXPORT
Mr J. Grigg, who presided at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Freezing Company, aald there was itrong evidence of the proapeota of the trade ia Engiand improving, the strongest evidence being that there are ia Europe, America, and Australian colonlea 17,000,000 leai aheep than there were a few yeara ago. In Europe and North Amerio* there had been a decrease of 61,000,000, and the Increase In South Amerioa and AnstraUsla vaa 37,000,000. The way to account for the fall iv prices waa inexplicable, bat the practioal question to be considered here In New Zealand was, wonld this state of thing* be conttnuona? He believed It would not, and that with the revival of trade a great reaotioo wonld take plaoe ; and that the raoga of prices both m wool and moat would be higher than m the reoent paat. The decrease of imported atock Into England m 1837 oompared with 1880 was 93,000 head, principally cattle ; and m dead moat a deorease of 1,775,000 cwtjand, notwithstanding the increase of population and the decrease of atocjc m Great Brttlau, the price had fallen" go much that the figures were quite startling. The decrease m the value of living animals imported into Great Britain was £4,030,000, and of dead meat £4,554,000. The matter had been referred to before, that there Bhould be some combination m London for the purpose of obtaining some reduction m charges there. It wa3 quite evident that the present reduction had not been at all equivalent to the increased business. They had found it possible to reduce from £d to | i, and, considering the cost m London, tney might well es-? peot a greater redaction there.
