Sir, — Aa I believe many of the ratepayers wonder why 1 had the presumption to allop; tnysolf to be placed In nomination for tho vacancy m tho Council, m epposiiion to such a person as Mr Bird, I would like to e*y, for tho Inforimt oa of thoao cone r*od, that after I wan askod to stand, I mudo a diligent enquiry of several of the leading Councillors, alao the Mayor and ex-Mayor, each of them declaring that they really did not know who wag likely to otand T pasticuhrly asked if Mr Bird would hd nominated I was told he hid positively declined. A.f rer meeting him I find it was true, for he did not wiah to be, bat WU3 pressed iato it, on the plea tint no ona elss would bo nominated. I qaHe r.groo that every iatep>yer has a perfect right to nO'ivnate and vote for whom he likes, which I hope they will, but what I hava to cay io, if I had known I would not have Ciuaod the expense to the Borough of an olvotlon, but being nominated, and believing I ssn honestly and practically represent tho ra'ppayora.
