MANIFESTO OF THE QUEENSLAND

Mxrch 8 Sir Samuel Griffiths, Premier, has issued a manifesto to electors m which he declares that the most immediately pressing question which will have to bo considered by the new Parliament will be that of Chinese immigration. He j proposes to increase the poll tax, and to diminish the number of Chinese carried by each ship,the prohibition of their work- ] ing on land or m mines, the imposition of an annual resideuce tax, and Asiatics to bo prohibited from becoming naturalised. •' urther, if necessary, an excise duty to be imposed by means of stamping goods manufactured by Asiatics. The address promises a revision of the tariff m the direction of protecting native industries, judicious reduction m railway rates to cheapen produce and help the farmers, a land tax is shadowed and a Bill is promised to deal with the grievances of the northern half of the celony. Sir Samuel hopes that the new Parliament will pass the Naval Defence Bill, and expresses the opinion that the time is come for the establishment of a university, and for the adoption of stringent measures to check the rabbit pest. In conclusion, he declares that the watchword must be Australia for the Australians, but does not believe m actual disloyalty and confict with Great 1 Britain on such a policy.
