Auckland, Maroh 6. Major General Goasiit, for many years a resident of Auckland, died to-day. I>e ceased was a retired officer of the Imperial Army. The hearing of petitions lodged with a view of upsetting the return of the present Licensing Committee for the City Wards was commenced to-day before the R.M , Mr Smith. The grounds of the petition were that the nomination papera of the candidate* were delivered too late to be valid. The Pnnaonby petition was heard firat, and the informality being admitted, the Bench declared the election m the Ponsonby dittrlot, where a " prohibition ticket" was returned, to ba void. Mr Ramsay leisee, admitted that he had insured plant 1 for £100 m the Norwich Union, which he hud purchased for £10, and that he told the agent It was worth £150. Mr S.nolair conducted the case on behalf of the Norwich Union. With referenoe to Mr Burton, photographer, of Dunediu, being reported misaiug from MUiford Sound, Captain Lambert, of the mall contract steamer A.orore, renorts that when vUiting the Sound on February 2 md, Messrs Burtrn and Sutherland o me on board, a id tbe utearaer subsequently towed thorn down the iSound to obtain views. Captain Lambert thinks when the Melbourne steamer whistled Barton was too far Inland to get on board and that he is all right.
