The oook of tho barque Speedwell, whioh arrived m Melbourne the other day, had an extraordinary esoape from drowning on the voyage. Tho barque waa struok by an appalling sea, whioh almost engulphod hor. The sea broke over the whole length of the vessel, from jibboon to taffrail, and swept tho galley oloau away, cooking utensils and all. Tho cook was m tho galley when the sea struok it, and [as both doora we.c dosed, ho had perforoe to go overboard with it. Fortunately he managed somehow to get dear of tho trap m whioh ho waa oaught, without being tnuoh bruised or hurt, and with rauoh [ difficulty he was got on board again. Tho barque was hove to at the time, and had but littlo way on hor, or he must inevitably have perished, for no boat oould havo lived m the sea whioh was raging all round, "liooau on Coiins."— Ask for Well's " Hough on Corns."
