The Rev Father Chastagnon will celebrate Mass at Eakaia on Sunday next ; and on the following Sunday tho eloquent Father Oumming, who has recently arrived from Europe, will open a Mission m the Church of the Holy Name, Ashburton.

At a special general meeting of the Ash. burton Caledonian Society, held last evening, Mr Eneen m the ohair, Mr John Gilmour was eleotod President of the Society vice Mr Donald MoLoan, resigned.
An election for a Licensing Committee for the Ashburton District took place at Tiawald yesterday. Following is the result : — Thos. Soaly, 86 ; Thomas Bullook, 35 ; David Thomas, 31; Donald McLean, 34; John Grigg, 34; S. S. Chapman, 11; G. W. Andrews, 9 ; R. F. Garbett, 9 ; J. M. Reid, 8; John 1 Clark, 6. Messrs Soaly, Bullook, Thomas, McLean, and Grigg wero deolared duly eleotod. John Owen Snydor, better known as the " Walking Wonder," died reoontly m the United States. Snyder was impelled, so he said, by some mysterious foroe to walk constantly, and he took his meals while oontinuing his oeaselesa tramp. He slept moat generally m a ohair, and tho minuto ho awoke he started walking.
At a meeting of the South Eakaia Library, Committee, Messrs Pyke (chairman), Cox Liady,>Dxley, J. Turner,- Makeiq, and Black barn being preoont, the Chairman , stated that he had done nothing about letting the reserve, and he proposed writing to the Commissioner of Crown Lands on the subjeot. Mr Oxley moved, and Mr Cox seconded, «• That tbe Chairman of the Eoad Board be written to and asked for any correspondence on the subject." The motion was carried." The I question of periodicals and papers to be taken was then gone into, and a largo number selected. The ordering was left m tho hands of the Chairman. The meeting adjourned for a fortnight at 7 p.m.
Tho anniversary of the Tinwald Wesleyan Sunday School will be commemorated od Sunday next by speoial services at 3 and 6.30 p.m., whioh will be conducted m the Templar Hall, on Sunday next, by Mr Buxton, M.H.E. There will be a social gathering m the same place on Monday evening.
