Auckland, February 17. Major-General Whitmore is making enquirios with respect to the nalsoouduot of a. number of Naval Volunteers at the opening of tha Calliope Dock. A booth was BBtabllahed near the Dook for the sale of spirits, a liquor permit not having been 'btained. Six casks of beer were aunt from this booth for the nse of the crews of the two warahips m dook, but tha commanders would not allow the casks to ba taken on board. This beer afterwards camo into the hando of the Naval Volunteers, many of whom inbibad freely, and going to the luncheon-shod matters began io get lively. Glbbbbb were smashed and other property damaged and the men mady for the Btoreroom where the drlak was placed, but the place had be?n barrioaded 'the police wore called m and two or them sustained injuries, m endeavoring to olear the building. The , volunteers who wore intoxicated had been dismissed from their duty with srmi m their possession, and serious result* might have ensued, had not the police Interfered *nd quelled it\9 disturbance.
