FIRE BRIGADE MATTERS.
TO THIS BDITOB. . B l*f7J% "^y t0 tha lett « « last night." Guardian" signed "A Member of the Western Fire Brigade," I admit stating ob reporter! that the Western Fire Brigade had only been first twice at tvo fir* during the laut two years, and I also admjt.my error m doing so, and am sorry I did uot notice the same until #hown to me m your report. What I intended to say waa •• Th-it the Western Brigade hid on two occasions only besn the first to show water, vi« , at Mullaney's fi e and the grass fir© m the Domain, both o! wbv'oh places are at their, own door - As to being first to a fira: tha W«st«m Brigade hold a rary great advantage, having a light engine drawn by ode horse, and generally carrying two or three men, whereas the Ashburton Brigade Jusan engine c«ry og on au average ten men to a fire, and requiring two horses, and on many oocaeion* has had to wait for the second Horse ; and once, at the fire »t tfampstead (Mr B Hughe*) after waiting fully ten miont-a * for horses tod none appaarinar, the engine *»as taken up by the. firemen themselves. But what is the usa of beini fir«t to a fire if you do not Ret the water oo ? T»»ke for example the fire at the Woollen Paotory, whioh your oorrespondent thit ks right to mention. Hia Brigade was certainly onthesoene long before üb, the alarm be»ng given at the Astern bell by the man senb from the Factory, wha had his horaa ready to yoke to the engine. Now, the Ashburton Brigade having about half a mile further to travel and lay on six lengths of auction hore (about 36 feet) and 400 feet of delivery, the water waa on as soon, if not before the Western. I do not wißh for one moment to throw any reflection upon the Western Fira Brigade, as I know they are always ready a«d willing to assist us whenever an alarm is given, but as my statement ia open to misconstruction, I wish to place the facts as they stand before the publio. lam, ©to., ; Captain Ashburfcon Volunteer Mre ! Brigade. Ashbnrton, Bth February, 1888.
