The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1888. LAND FOR SETTLEMENT.
A " Gazette " was issued on the 2nd mat. containing 22 pages devoted to a Hat of l^n^la open for application under the Land Act Aiftear/ment Act of last session. It is disappointing 4*? find that among the lands no declared open therp are n » "{second claes " lands m Canterbury, as we contend there should hmvo been, but it is, so far as it goep, uatis(actory to find that the Government hnfo at leaGfc i»#d» a beginning m the ifftj of opening up Ufld ff>f . 100 acres are m Ashley County ; 15,551 acres m Ashburton County, 10,427 acres m Geraldino County (of which last 6340 acres arc situated on tho Auhwick Flat, six miles from Fairlie Creek Railway Station) and 26 acres m Waimate County. A footnote to the list of blocks open, which appears elsewhere shows the areaa which may be taken up by any one applicant. An regards price, ! the figure per acre given is tho porchasc price for cash. To ascertain the price, if bought on tho deferred payment system, add one-foarth to the cash price. The result will give tho total price, which Bom, divided by 14, will give the amount of each annual instalment. The annual rental of land taken up on perpetual lease will be a sum equal to 5 per cent of the cash price, that is to say, a* many shillings per annum as the cash purchase price represents pounds.
