On Saturday tbe lawn tennis tournament wai finished off at the Domain. Tbe two fittest who bad survived through the three previous rounds, Messrs J Jameson and O. Merewethcr met In the final, and after a very tough straggle the former proved the better man. Play began at 3 o'olook, both men starting from scratch. It was generally ooneldtred after the play that Jameson had shown m the previous rounds, that he had a tolerably easy task before him, but the result proved otherwilt, m Merawether played up so well that It was not till tbe 6 rial same of tbe final set that the match was won. Mero* wether started by winning* the first two sets somewhat eailly, .6— 2, 6— 4, his placing thronghout the matoh being exceedingly good and daoldedly superior to his opponent's. Jameson was, however, particularly swift In setting about the court and was the better man at volleying. The third and fourth sets went io Jameson easily, 6—3, 6 -1. The fif»h and deoldlDg set was the toughest straggle of all, and at one time it appeared deoldedly In Merewether's favor, as tbe score was oalled Merawether 5, Jameson 3. Each man waa now at bi« best, and the rallies were long and vigorous. Gradually the soore orept op, 6—4, then 5 all, and tbe excitement grew Intenoe. But the deciding game was the least Interesting, as Jameson went straight oat without giving bis opponent a chance to soore. Tbe tesults of the tournament have thus been, that tbe doubles have fallen to Messrs A. Fooka and Oliver, and tbe singles to Mr J. Jtxneson, with Mr G. Merewether as runner up.
