A BARD CASE. [Per Prkss Association.! Blenheim, February 4 An elderly man named John Gardiner, who was arrested by the Weatport police, and forwarded here, was brought op on remand today, charged with " sticking up " Qeo. Henderson, a young man who is a boundary koepor at Meant P^trbrcb Station, on 12ib January. Henderson is quite positive accused is not the man who had fired at him. The man who 6 *ed the shot was dark as a n'ggar, with long black hair. Ho was sft 101a In height, whereas Gardiner is only abont sft 7ft. Tbe R.M. asked if the description sent to tho police had been th» same as given In the courr. Bergt. ScanUn replied tb at a similar de> soription had been Ben*, to the Inspect or at Ivehdn. Tha R.M. said it was an extraordinary thing how the police oould have arrested the accused m faoe of suoh a description, aa he In no way answered. Gardiner was then discharged, and so far as oan be learned was tamed adrift after being m cuatody about a fortnight. He stated that he walked overland from Obristohorob, the last work he had done being cutting firewood for the cook at Flaxbourne station. $ergt.
