All rabbiters m the employ of the Government, along with the Inspectors m the Rabbit Department, have received notice that at the end of three months, the Government intend to dispense wth their services. These steps have been taken, because the Government intend to throw upon landowners, the responsibility of exterminating tbe rabbits, but the Government are willing to give them all reasonable assistance m doing so. The subject is to be dealt with m the Land Bill this session. The election of a member to represent Newtown m the Assembly took place to-day, when Mr Abbott, a Freetrader, was elected by a majority of. eighty-one. Mr Lillywhite has received a cable message from London, stating that any number of crack players can be got lor the football team which is about to visit the colonies. Sir William Jervois leaves for Auckland via Russell m H.M.S. Nelson tomorrow. His Excellency expects to reach Auckland about the 13th, m tims to open the Calliope Dock. j
