A deputation including Cardinal Manning nnd the Anglican Bishop of Hereford, waited on the Marquis of Salisbury, and asked that the Government should take some steps to relieve the distress existing among the poor of London. The Premier was * very guarded m his reply, but expressed much sympathy with the object of the deputa* tion, He promised that enquiry should be made into the cause of the distress, with a view to the alleviation of the condition of the poor.
