NEW SOUTH WALES.
Sydney, February 2. Lady Parkes, wife of Sir Henry Parkes, is dead, aged 74. Cardinal Moran has replied to the allegations of Dr Thornton, Bishop of Ballarat, relative to the part played by the Roman Catholics in the Centenary celebration. His Eminence denies that grace was not said in order to please the Catholics. He expected the Governor to pronounce it, but it seems that no arrangement was made for it. He also sta'es that the Catholic party were not dominant, and he personally re- 1 stricted the number of those present at the public functions to three, though a great number of prelates were in Sydney for the special Catholic services. ! A heavy gale was experienced here to-day, and the roof was blown off the new stand at the Show Grounds, and other considerable damage done. The combined Australian team which plays against Lillywhite's team tomorrow only includes McShane and YVorrell outside of New South Wales players. i/f.r Thos. Qarrett, Minister for Lands, jn replying to the resolution passed tjy th.3 Stock Board delegates on the rabbit question, said the Government had accepted a tender for 350 miles of fencing on the border, but great difficuliy had been experienced in obtaining the necessary material. Thr? Queensland fence would be. completed in about .two months. He further remarked that they could not see their way to adopt M. Pasteur's dubious remedy. The Government policy was to encourage landholders to combat the scourge, particularly by means of fencing, which he found during a visit to New Zealand to be a most efficacious preventive there.
