In ancient days, whan all was youog, !; And Love and Hope were rife, Dan Cupid fed ou rustic f sre, 1 Ai»d live 4 a country life.
He rose betimes at break of day, And iround the coun'ry harri:d, TJpstirring hearts that were unwed, And soothing down the married.
jfjut then, on wider mischief bent, 1 ' He hjed him to th| cit^, fipdiDg much to eiiit bid taste, Be stayed there-rmore'e the pity.
Men built him there a golden houso, Bedight with golden itarg, They feasted bim on golden grain, And wine m golden jars
Tuey draped his pretty nakedness In richest cloth of gold, iud set bim up m business, Whera love was bought and sold.
And thas he led a city life, Forgetting h ; s nativity ; Since then he's gone from bad to worse, From Cupid to cup ; dity.
