NEW SOUTH WALES.
Sydney, January 28 The " Daily Telegraph," m referring to the statements made by Lord Augustus Loftus at his bankruptcy examination, states that he has slandered the colony, and urgej that Parliament should deal with it. Lord Augustus was handsomely remunerated, and if he did not save money it must have been because he was loaded with European debts. Sydney. January 29. John Stapleton, a miner and a new arrival m the colony, was found dead yesterday on the road near Hill Grove mine, about 313 miles north of Sydney. When picked up it was seen that his throat was cut, and he had also received several scalp wounds ; m fact the base of the skull had been fractured. The watch which he was known to have worn when last seen is mizsing, and it is supposed that Stapleton was murdered. At the Cadgegong races on Saturday a horse fell and one of the jockeys was killed. There is great distress among the unemployed, and to-day one of their number commiited suicide owing to his being unable to obtain work. Steps are now being taken to form an Agricultural Society m the colony. Three Freetrade candidates are m the field for the Newtown seat against one whose sympathy is with the prqtectionifjts.
