THE POSTAL CONFERENCE

(per pkb-s association.)

Bydnev, January 27. The Postal Conference has been concluded. The general feeling of the members is stated to be adverse to the construction of a Pacific Cable, principally on account of the long term for which the subsidy is required. The Queensland Government were strongly urged to join the present cable subsidy, but Mr Wilson said it had always been that colony's policy to stand out. A proposal to allow persons writing to other colonies to send a postal stamp of the colony from which they write, for a reply was negatived on the ground that such a practice would be open to abuse. All the decisions arrived at by the Conference not requiring legislation will come into force immediately.
