The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. FRIDAY, JANUARY 27, 1888. DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES.
It is our annual custom, on receipt from Dr. Barnardo of accounts of the great and philanthropic work m which he is engaged, to place before our readers a few particulars thereanent, m the hope that it may induce some of those who can afford to do so to forward donjons, however small, m aid of the little waifs and strays of London, so many of who_» through the agency of the good Dr. have been rescued Irpm lives of misery and want and enabled to become useful members of society. Here are a few of the facts presented m a circular dated from the offices, 18 —26 Stepney Causeway, last month. During the four months immediately preceding, viz., August — November, 1887, no jess than 2.406 miserable boys and girls besought admission to the Homes, viz., m Augustj"_s62 j m September, 551 ; m October, 592 ; and m November, 601. Between January and December there were actually admitted m all 1583 children who were either orphans or waifs and strays, and at the date of the cucular there were altogether 214© under ihp hospitable »oof of the Homes, where they are being fed, clothed, taught and christianised. " Of 2643 rescued and trained boy's and girls placed out with farmers m Canada (says Dr. Barnardo) only xtp have lailed, that is 99^ per cent have been successful m their new life ; while 11,216 have altogether been placed m service at Home and abroad since the work of the " Homes" began, 21 years ago." Yet great as is the record of work accomplished, there is room for its wide ex'ension, the cup of the misery of London is 30 full and overflowing, for we read " Each day crowds of starving little ones besiege our gates," and it is added that "the struggle this winter will be fierce, arduous and long-sustained. We want the sympathy and practical aid of everyone:" ..'Ej&o now (continues the circular) we 'are enlarging our border./' and day andf Right jlhe -woik, of searching for, finding and rescuing the wails and strays of tbe streets---' which is rightly characterised as "at leasJt a partial solution of one phase of the social problem of to day"— is going .on. The motto 0/ tfee institution is— " No destitute child shall regain homeless if brought to our doors," and"w_? hope thjtt Christians and philanthropic ' peopje ojf a\\ creeds the world over will be moye4 to acsiYjt Dr Barnardo io carrying o# 90 nofte an ajm, '
