A Sticking-up Case. Wbstpobt, J<»noary 25 A man, giving the name of .Tno. Gardner, was arrested on the Bailer Road, 13 mileß from Westport, yesterday, by Oon■fableßowden of Lyell. He is wanted for the " B'ickidg-up " case at Birchill ■tatioß, Marlborongh. .It is alleged he entered the hat of a man named Ander ion, and stole some money, and fired a revolver at Anderson. The prisoner answers the description, and admits being at the station on the day m question, but denies having had any row there. He will be remanded to Blenheim.

At th« B.M. Oourfc to-day Robert Sloan wm charged with stealing a swag, part of which was the property of bis mate. The swag contained clothiDg, mostly old, ■ome articles belong to each. The men had come from Docadln and had had a common parse. Prosecutor s»id he desired to withdraw the oharge which he had marie on the spur of the moment. He did not now believe for a moaaent the articles were stole?. Accused defended himftelf most good hnmoredly, treating the affair as friendly difference of opinion. The Magistrates dismissed the ease, which they s«id never should hava been brought lato Oouit.
Dunbdxn, January 25. A five-roomed house at North East Valley was burned down! this morning. Thn fnroitare was insured m the Equitable for £100.

If tha works bad been fully employed, good retutns might have been expected, aa a set profit of £218 was made for the five months' actual operations. Another tihiproent is now being got ready for the fl.s. Selembris, which calls at the end of the month.
The Weatfcer. The weather is very unseasonable, a great deal of rain filing.
