TRAMWAYS,
The Government has decided to lease the City tramways for a long term of years, on condition that the lessees guarantee the introduction of some better motor system than that at pjesent employed. Final arrangements for the tease of the tramways will be deferred until after the result of the experiments l»ith an electric tram car is made known. MR BRIGHT ON FREETRADE. Mr R. Wise, Attorney-General, has received a letter from the Right Hon John Bright, the eminent Englishman and Freetrader, m which the Right Hon gentleman insists that all the facts are pn the sjde of £r°etrade. Mr Bright goes on to say tbat rigid adherence tc the policy of Freetrade is all the more . necessary and advantageous for the reason that other countries have not yet followed the English example. He further declares that the Araericar .protectionist tariff is breaking dowr afld rcjust db so unless the Protectionist! pan persuade the Government to spenc twenty millions op armaments. Free trade, says Mr Bright, is a policy o wisdom and peace between nations.
