Melbourne. January 28. The « Argus " defends the Federal Council from the remarlcs of The " Times," and points to that and other English papers which have condemned New South Wales' attitude ia naming the colony Australia as unpatriotic. Tfte "Argus" contends that the Federal Council was instituted rather for conference on intercolonial subjects than for legislation, but the latter avoids the delay requisite for Imperial interference, as evinced by the promptitude with which Queensland has got control of the pearl fisheries.
Mr Deakin has refused to bring back those arrested for being concerned m the Gourlay jewel robbery, and ajso the pecessary witnesses, at the public expense, as it would be a bad precedent. The cost would be about ;£6Bo, and Gourlay is unable to bear the (expense himself.
