Sydnby, January 21. The celebration of the centenary wai commenced by the laying of the new wing of the St Vincent De Paul Hospital by Lord Carrington. Among those present were his Eminence Cardinal Moran, his Grace the Archbishop of Sydney, and other Church dignitaries.

A most elaborate programme has been arranged for this week, and amusements of all sorts take place each day. '

A large number of the members' ol the Opposition have declared against • the proposed centennial banquet, on the grounds that it appears unseemly fo spend a sum of money m this manner while the Government profess retrenchment, and also while there is so much distress m the city.
