ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES
At a meeting of thw School Committee' 0 nference, held m Danedin on Monday evening, the Btcrete.ry (Mr Mark Onben read the following letter from Mr W. J. Steward, M H R. :— D«ar Sir, — Yours re a3hool oommitteo •leoiiona to hand. Yoa will see by " Hansard " that In the debate on tba second n adlng of my Educational We Bill tuo prenent Minister of Education Intimated hla entire approval, of the repeal of tbe cumulative vote, and argr-d that a o^use ahoald be addod deficit g the. meaning of "householder." I ac onoo stated that I would be cnly too happy to accept a ol»use introduced by the Government. Bath thiß potnt aud that of prior nomination were included m my Softool Oammittees Election Bill of two or three aessiunß ago; but th a year I proposed to deal only with the cumulative vote, (this being oar crucial dimoulty with the Upper House), intending if I could get this one matter settled this session to pr ceed next aexnioa with the other neoeaaary reforms. Unfortunately, though for the sixth time I carried my seoond reading (by general oonaoat on tbla oooaeicn), there is no chance of the bill go!ng farther this seesion, I mean to try again, and it may be well for your conference to petition both houses—oipoolally the Tipper House— and to take action te secure that the fohool committees of "other educational districts ah all do likewise. Aa Parliament will probably be m session again by May next, it lift not to soon to be gin to make the necessary arrangements. I should be obliged if apeclul attention were directed to the most suitable definition of the term " householder," It was resolved that the letter be remitted to the executive, to take such action with reference to it as they might deem necessary.
