The Emperor of China has forwarded a number of presents to his Excellency the Governor, Sir Henry Parkes, and other gentlemen m recognition of the hospitable reception accorded to the Chinese Commissioners on their recent fisit'to New South Wales. h meeting of Netf Z-alanders, held last night, was attended by aboul jpo persons.. Resolutions were passed m favor of protection} and condemning Major Atkinson's Government for shelving the tariff question last sesson. Resolutions were also passed calling upon the Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand, to make the fiscal policy of the colony ihe first business this year, aod asking him to substitute a land and income tax for a property tax. The swollen corpse of a man has been discovered m the city water-supply basin. From appearances it has been immersed four days. Further deaths have been reported from sunstroke. The heat yesterday was 101 m the shade here, and m the country \ 14. The Postal Conference met here today, but no business was' transacted beyond the election of a Chairman, Mr Roberts being chosen for that position.
